Types of Emergency
Fire
If there is a fire in your property, the first action of any homeowner should be to evacuate all people from the property, dial 999, and ask for the fire service. Once the fire service team has attended the scene and extinguished the fire, the fire investigation team will conduct an investigation to establish the root cause of the fire and inform the homeowner of the outcome of the investigation.
It will then be necessary to conduct an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) on the property to assess and report any damage to the electrical system to the homeowner and insurance company. Repairs or replacements can then take place.
GX Electrical holds the highest qualification level of inspection, testing and reporting available in the UK and is insured to carry out this type of inspection.
If you require an EICR on a fire-damaged property, please click this CONTACT link to call or email us.
Circuit breaker / RCD Trip
Circuit breakers and RCDs are protective devices. These devices protect circuits and equipment from damage and also save human life by cutting power in circuits when they detect a fault or an electric shock event.
If you have a circuit breaker or RCD that will not reset, CONTACT us at the earliest opportunity so that we can arrange a same-day call-out to investigate why this is happening and restore power to your critical circuits.
Complete Loss Of Power
A complete loss of all electrical power in a property can be a result of a local power cut or a very dangerous problem with supply equipment in your property.
If you have a complete loss of power, consult your neighbour in the first instance and see if they are also without power. If both properties have no power, please contact your electrical provider for assistance.
If your property has no power whatsoever but your neighbour has power, please CONTACT us immediately so that we can attend your property as quickly as possible to assess the situation.
Burning smell / Smoke
A burning smell or smoke coming from a socket, switch, or light could be a sign of accessory failure or loose terminations.
Ignoring these signs is not an option; the problem will continue until either a fire breaks out or, if installed, a protective device cuts power to the circuit.
For a homeowner facing a burning smell or smoke in their property, the first action should be, if safe to do so, to turn all circuits off at the fuse board that could be responsible for the burning smell or smoke. If this stops the problem, CONTACT us right away so that we can investigate and correct any damage to your installation.
If turning the circuits off at the fuseboard does not stop the burning smell and smoke, then evacuation of the property should take place in case of a fire breaking out.
Please CONTACT us in either of these scenarios.
Sparking / Hot Accessories
Sparking and hot accessories such as light switches and sockets are almost always a sign of arching. If the terminations of the conductors are loose, the electrical current is heating the cable and accessories more than it is intended to take, and if left to carry on, it can begin to melt a cable or start a fire.
Another symptom of arching is a crackling or buzzing sound.
In this situation, if the homeowner is confident and feels safe to do so, turn the circuit off at the fuseboard that will stop this sparking, and CONTACT us so that we can investigate why this is happening and repair any damage that may have taken place.
Water Damage
In the event of a major water leak in a property, the mains water stock cock should be turned off imediately to stop the flow of water.
A plumber would need to be called so that the source of the leak can be repaired, this will allow the water supply to be turned back on.
If the homeowner has seen or suspects that water has found it’s way into the electrical system and is now causing problems, please get in CONTACT with us to arrange a fault finding visit.
